Chico Chicken hatched chicks! A lot of them. I *think* there are ten, but they’re really hard to count because they look alike and move around in a little herd.

The eggs started peeping audibly on Thursday, and the first chick hatched on Friday. The situation was somewhat unknown for a while because Chico Chicken refused to get off her nest to let us have a look at what was going on. We think the last chicks hatched out on Sunday.

Today was the first day that I saw the whole lot of them up and about. I’m totally in awe that such a small hen could keep all those eggs warm and cared for.

Chico Chicken and her chicks will stay in the little greenhouse for a couple months until it starts to get too hot in there and the chicks are big enough to fend for themselves in with the big chickens.

These photos aren’t all that great because Chico Chicken did NOT want me messing around with her babies. At one point, I got a little too close, and she jumped me. Thankfully, I walked away unscathed, but I was reminded that she’s a force to be reckoned with.

Oh, they’re so cute! Are they little barred rock chicks? They look like my Beatrice did when she was little!

They’re half black copper marans and half red or black sex-linked (except for one that might be half Chico Chicken).

Chico Chicken rules! Thanks so much for posting photos (and risking bodily injury to get them, apparently). Put a smile on my face! The homestead sure is fecund right now. Spring has sprung!
