Kai Ryssdal: The Friendliest Goat

May 26, 2011 · 9 comments

Little Kai Ryssdal is the friendliest goat I’ve ever owned. Anytime I venture into the barn, he comes right up, and if I’m not paying him enough attention, he’ll start jumping on me. Levi and Charlotte are thrilled that they can pet him through the fence, and even Kit the dog has befriended him.

Kai is half Nubian and half La Mancha. Nubians are know to be loud, obnoxious, and kind of skittish. Our goats are not particularly loud, but they’re not very fond of people either. La Manchas are know to be very friendly. When I took Kai’s mom, Bella, to be bred, I had trouble keeping the herd of La Mancha does out of my car, and they wouldn’t give me an inch of personal space.

I’m not sure what Kai’s eventual fate will be. We’ve sold wethers for meat in the past, but I think this goat will find a long-term home here on the property.

Out here in the boonies, radio is a big part of our lives. His sister is Neda Ulaby :-)

Please know that I named my goat with the utmost respect and admiration for the “real” Kai Ryssdal who tweeted a link to this post today. Shout out to all you Marketplace fans!

ha! I don’t listen to radio at all, so I didn’t even get it, but the fact that the “real” Kai Ryssdal tweeted your post is really awesome. I enjoyed reading this little conversation here :)

he is the most adorable goat i have ever seen.
what a sweetheart.
i think he might need an autographed photo of the “real” kai ryssdal framed & hanging in his barn ?

i like the concept of naming your goat after marketplace’s host. am assuming your radio reception is adequate out there at the end of the road, and appreciate your lifestyle. am also generally concerned that npr is being waylaid by big money corporate republican interests and suspect kai is a cog, or a “survivor” goat. he is just too hip and cool and smart to be believed.
