I might be nuts, but I just picked 80 pounds of blueberries. My kids, my mom, and I went to Radke’s Blueberries (off of Highway 99 in South Corvallis) yesterday afternoon, and the picking was SO easy that I almost couldn’t stop myself. I got about 45 pounds in less than three hours. I woke up this morning kidless (Henry took them to work) and motivated, so I went back and picked another 35 pounds in two hours (including a few Instagram breaks). The vast majority of these berries will go into my chest freezer, and we’ll enjoy them all winter long.
I have nothing bad to say about any of the U-pick blueberry places in the Corvallis area, but the reality is that Radke’s is the best. period.
First off, the place is beautiful, and if you go in the morning or evening, there are plenty of shady areas to escape from the heat. Secondly, Janet and Ed Radke, the owners, are great folks. My parents have known them since way back when, and they’re just really nice but also super hardworking and knowledgeable. Thirdly, the blueberry bushes are very healthy and very prolific, dripping with large, sweet berries (Jersey, Blue Crop, and my favorite Hurbert). Fourthly, it’s CHEAP, $1.50/lb. for U-pick berries or $2/lb. if you don’t want to pick them yourself. Compare that to $3+ per pint, which is the going rate at the farmers’ market. Fifthly, harvesting your own blueberries is a very pleasant experience, and this place is perfect for picking five pounds or 100 pounds.
I was picking along and found this empty nest in one of the bushes.
If you live in this area, you should go to Radke’s like…today. Well, actually, they’ll probably offer U-picking for all of August and possibly into September, so there’s no real hurry, but I can personally attest to the fact that the picking is as good as it gets right now.
They’re open every day 8 am to 8 pm (but it’s most pleasant to go before noon or after 5ish if it’s hot out). They have buckets available to pick into, but you should bring your own boxes or containers to take berries home.
Find them:490 SE Three Mile Ave. (just off Hwy. 99 a little north of Airport Rd.) Corvalis, OR 97333
If you have questions, call (541) 753-5680, and they’re on Facebook (though the page is updated remotely by Janet and Ed’s daughter).
Tell them Camille sent you! (They’ll get a kick out of that.)
