When I left my house this morning, it was a beautifully cold but sunny day, like it has been for almost a week. As I headed down the hill, I descended into a dense freezing fog, the kind that slows down my driving because there could be a deer standing in the middle of the road, and I wouldn’t see it until the last second.
At my parents’ house (about 20 minutes away from my own), the frost was pervasive. They live in a shadowy draw, and this time of year, the sun never even hits the house. It’s colder than the surrounding area, and when we get a stretch of below-freezing temperatures, the frost will start to accumulate, giving the neighborhood an almost snowy appearance. It is truly beautiful, but again, it’s cold, so we stoke the fire, drink tea, and try to be as aerobic as possible when working outdoors.
Here are a few shots I snapped this morning.
I hear you East Coasters are having unseasonably warm weather lately. I think I could use a dose of that right about now. Brrr…

We could use a little of the East Coasters’ warmth here in SoCal these days too! 28 this morning when my little ones headed to school. I have to move my citrus trees inside.
Beautiful photos!
Meh, it’s actually finally dropping into the 30’s in Ohio. It’s been raining nonstop so I’m actually thankful it’s turning to snow. Your photos are gorgeous! Keep em coming.
Beautiful photos! It’s cold down here in the OC, but not THAT cold! Double wrapping to keep warm.
I am really loving these photos: the details of the freeze with the blur behind!!
Wow, that image of frosty chard is just beautiful!!! We were having warm weather our east, then it left, and last night it sort of returned; it was heralded by a strange, 3-minute pelting of sleet. After that, the air felt warmer. Weird. But no worries, more frosts and cold are expected this weekend. I suppose it IS December…
I loved the wreath-making pics. My husband built a shed in our garden, and it’s nearly done. It turned into a rather Herculean task that required help from friends and neighbors, and we had thought about decorating it with lights and having a “shed-warming” party for everyone who’d contributed in some way (tools, helping hands, lifting arms, boards, etc.) Your photos of bundled people having fun outside are inspiring!
Glad to hear about the windfall on board orders, but I can see how it would be a mixed blessing. Try to enjoy it and look forward to a likely more manageable order list in the new year. Gosh, a workshop and storage right by your house would be the ticket… simpler to say than do, right? I’m glad you have gifted helpers. Hang in there!
I love the idea of a shed-warming party. Sounds like fun to me. Just tell everyone to wear warm clothes and have lots of hot beverages on hand.
